Suburban Homecraft

Education and Resources for Living Well with Little

Urban Homesteading in the Willamette Valley

Welcome to Suburban Homecraft!

salad gardenFor more than half a century, corporations have been convincing people that they can cook and preserve and provide food that is better tasting, more nutritious, and more efficient than individuals can provide for themselves. They even suggest that consumers have more important things to do with our time than stand in the kitchen!

We believe that to be a lie. Corporations have proved time and again that what really concerns them is money — getting as much as possible while spending as little as possible on their products. What’s most important to us is flavor, nutrition, eating as locally as possible, and keeping our costs as low as possible (we’ve got that in common, I guess).

If you want to learn how to live well without needing a lot of money, we want to help you! We can teach you how to get food from the ground to the table (or from a local farm to the table), how to preserve fresh foods to eat during the winter, how to make cheese and soap, even how to raise poultry for eggs and/or meat.

We have been practicing those things for more than 15 years, adding more and more elements as we go. We’re still adding elements and learning new things, and we’d love to bring you along for the ride. We have classes for all ages offered through Willamalane in Springfield and  through Amazon Community Center, Campbell Community Center, and the River Road Park District in Eugene. We also offer individual classes for adults and kids to groups of six to sixteen participants. If you have a group interested in taking one or more classes, contact us!

Most of our offerings are for people who have more time than money and want to learn to do for themselves. If you, on the other hand, have more money than time and would rather buy handmade soap or slipper socks than learn to make them, click on our store.
